The new Spire for Belfast Cathedral was won in an architectural competition in 2004 and finally came to fruition in May 2007. Constructed from stainless steel and manufactured in Switzerland, the bottom of the spire begins 20m from the Cathedral floor and rises a further 50 m into the sky. It is connected to the existing building via a slender steel structure while piercing a 6m x 6m glass roof. Light now floods the central section of the cathedral and the eye is drawn up from the bottom tip to the top of the new spire in true cathedral building tradition.
