Slinky Bridge

This competition entry for a new pedestrian bridge over a freeway was inspired by the local area’s reputation for steel production.
The bridge is conceived as a stretched stainless steel spring or ‘Slinky’ which is held taught by steel cables coiling in the opposite direction to the spiral of the spring. These cables are then anchored to the ground at each end. The walkway is then supported by the base of the spring.
